What do teenage girls think about play spaces and multi-use games areas?

A report on research with young women on play spaces and MUGAs focussing on safety.

This report was part of a larger research project looking at the perceptions of women and girls of safety in parks. It presents the findings of a photo elicitation activity with girls and young women to explore what they ‘like’ and ‘dislike’ about park play spaces and multi-use games areas (MUGAs) with a focus on feelings of safety.

The research involved 24 images, shown in ten focus groups to a total of 50 teenage girl participants aged 13-18 years from across West Yorkshire. The focus group participants were given the opportunity to say what they ‘like’ and ‘dislike’ about the photos with a focus on feelings of safety.

This report summarise girls’ views on six different types of play spaces: fenced MUGAs and ball courts; mixed-used play spaces; cycling and skating; swings and hammocks; seating and shelters; and park landscapes.

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
